Decision Making for Teens
The Upfront Truth about Teens and Decision Making
• Teens are going to try and assert their independence by challenging their parent; this is normal. Uncomfortable for the parent but normal nonetheless!
• No matter what the teen says out of rebellion, they need support and the leadership provided by their parents to make decisions especially in regards to their future.
• The more tough, strict, and stern parents become is equal to the amount of rebelliousness a parent will observe in a teen.
Decision Making for Teens
I’ll be the first to say it, teen years are very hard on parents. The teens want independence while the parent is trying to maintain a comfortable sense of influence and control just as they always have. Because of this shift, teens become more at risk to failure in school, drugs & alcohol, crime, and an abundance of other things that scares the heck out of parents. Their ability to navigate through these teen years while making great decisions is so important. A common mistake made by parents and even schools is that the skill of good decision making is assumed instead of taught as a life skill.
As your child grows older, you will become less in control of the decisions that they make and they may even seek guidance from you less. The best way to help them once they reach this age group is to make sure that they have a solid foundation to make great decisions alone if need be. From that point, you will want to just continue giving of your time, share your stories & experiences, remind them of the values that they were taught, and shower them with trust & love.
